Blue waters, incredible beaches, luscious greens and cobble-stoned whitewashed villages lead you to none other than the islands of Greece.
This destination was on Mama Desiree’s bucket list! Ever since she was young and even more so, after seeing the Mamma Mia movies, she was determined to go. So, her three daughters spontaneously decided to make that dream come true- and I was one of them!
Skopelos is the island where most of the scenes of the first Mamma Mia movie was filmed.
The island has no airport, so the fastest way to get there by air is via neighbouring Skiathos and an hour ferry ride to the islands.
Skopelos is known to be one of the most beautiful ports in the country, with a cluster of white walls topped with terracotta tiles, ruins of a Venetian fortress and chapels scattered within the town.
Mountains dominate the western and eastern parts of the island.
The beautiful beaches we visited were Stáfylos, and took a walk five minutes east over the headland to more scenic, sand-and-pea-gravel beach Velanió (also known as the unofficial nudist beach of Skopelos), Kastani (beach where most scenes of the Mamma Mia movie was shot), Panormos (Panormos is considered among the most beautiful beaches on Skopelos. It has a sandy coast, sparkling water and a great sunset view) and Agnontas, a nice area with a small port and restaurants.
We highly recommend taking the Mama Mia tour by Dolphin of Skopelos to learn more about the island, visit the ‘Church on a hill’ Agios Ioannis church and even visit the local Olive factory.
We stayed at Poseidon apartments and cannot recommend this highly enough; the staff were wonderful and the rooms spotless, cleaned everyday with fresh towels, and of course the rooms come with a beautiful view.
On our return, due to an eight hour transit in Athens, we visited the streets of Plaka and ruins of Acropolis. Most travellers flock Athens and the popular islands of Santorini and Mykonos, especially during Summer. So if you want to avoid long queues, touristy hot spots and escape crowded beaches, check out Skopelos island instead! The weather was about 28 degrees in mid August and water temperature just right to swim in all day.
Skopelos will make you pleasantly gasp and smile at every corner, and as a photographer it was so easy to capture these beautiful moments.
The scenery of this incredible island really provides the perfect backdrop for any photo as you will see below, for this amazing mama and daughter trip.
